Our memory café provides a weekly support group for care partners simultaneously as their partners enjoy a cognitive enrichment program down the hall. Some memory cafés bring care partners together to do a specific project (art, craft, etc.) or enjoy a specific experience, (a performance, movement class, or musical concert, etc.) together. At the SE Valley Sun Lakes café, we also offer quarterly events for our care partners to socialize together: luncheons, picnics, holiday parties, and an annual gala where everyone gets dressed up and dances their hearts out with a food, champagne, comradery and music – all in the mission of JOY together with our new friends.
Our gala is also a fundraiser.Memory Café is designed to be a warm and inviting place for anyone experiencing cognitive decline along with their circle of family and friends. Whether that cognitive decline is from a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, age, health-related complications or dementia, a welcoming door at Memory Cafe is always wide open for all and is always a free event.
Café serves those living with cognitive change both with appropriate education and creative stimulation, as well as providing critical social, psychological and emotional support. Families are often surprised by the fact that their loved ones make new friends. That is exactly one of the most joyful and fulfilling benefits of this kind of program.
Memory café serves our care partners in so many different ways. Because you are meeting with people of similar circumstances, your journeys will reflect similar situations. Café is filled with many loving care partners and each week as everyone’s stories and experiences are shared and unfold, members can choose to dive more deeply into a challenge they’re facing, or just listen and process. Support group members share through their experiences of uncertainty, questions, answers, grief, fear, ideas, tears, love, learning, laughter, resignation and inspiration. Our support group members also make new friends and most importantly, support each other.
Our Memory Café Program is every Monday (except holidays)
Each group is warm and welcoming, with both long-standing and new members who attend as their schedule allows.
You do not need to RSVP but you can come when you can, with or without your care partner. Many people will stay at the first engagement session with their spouse/parent/friend, but others choose to only stay long enough for their partner to feel comfortable. Often that happens quickly. ***NOTE: Partners with cognitive changes do need to have someone available in the support group room in case something comes up.
9:30 - 10:00 a.m. - Enjoy refreshments while mingling with other families
10:00 – 11:00 A.M. - Engagement for persons living with cognitive change. Interactive, multi-disciplinary weekly programs vary from different kinds of educational presentations (e.g. Fighter Planes, History of Quilting, The Beatles, Animals of Africa, etc.) to music and movement, art, creative sessions with multiple kinds of mediums, and monthly music therapy with an ASU certified music therapist.
Simultaneously a Support Group for Care Partners is offered down the hall.

As a member we do gather your contact information and emergency contact. We also take weekly attendance because that information helps us with getting grants to support our organization, as well as helping us understand how seasonal visitors affect our group for staffing purposes. This also facilitates connection between members. Many members have formed friendships and connect individually outside of the group. **You can choose not to have your information shared with others and only have it be for office use only.
Part of the paperwork includes an authorization for being able to take pictures. Sometimes pictures are used in-house, including but not limited to our website and newsletters, and the community in the form of social media. **You also have an opt-out option to not have your photos shared outside of the organization.

Sun Lakes Memory Café has been my major support as a caregiver for my spouse who has dementia. The members who come week after week and are willing to share their stories and the facilitators who guide us through the curves and detours of this bumpy road offer firsthand information, local resources, direction and advice. As I navigate through this journey, I depend on the many Café friendships I have made to get me through the days ahead.
